Schools that specialize

Public, charter and private schools for students with disabilities, by state: dyslexia, autism, deaf and blind schools, therapeutic day schools and more.

Find a school

11,611 schools: public special education schools and public charter schools (NCES 2024-25), private special education schools (NCES 2023-24), and member lists from NAPSEC, the IDA LD Independent School Network, and the deaf and blind school councils.

Before you choose

  • Public placement is free. If the IEP team places your child in a special school, public or private, the district pays.
  • Choosing a private school yourself is different. Your child may lose the individual right to a free appropriate public education. See Paying for it.
  • Visit, and ask for data: class size, staff training, how progress is measured, and how students move back to their home school.
  • Trust tiers: schools from NCES are Public record. Schools from member lists are Registry Listings: call first.
